Destination: Victoria - Established as a trading fort in 1843 by the Hudson's Bay Company, Fort Victoria grew rapidly from private trading establishment to Provincial capital of the new province of British Columbia, in the new country of Canada. Quaint and steeped in British tradition, it is a marvelously elegant city where afternoon tea is still served at the grand old Empress Hotel, and strolls on the edge of the inner harbour are a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Boasting now of a population of over 300,00, it still has a small town friendly feel. Its' many public and private gardens, not the least of which is the world famous Butchart Gardens, give it the richly deserved title of "the Garden City".
